Question Can some one help with this "head" ache

HOW's Everyone out there.....Good I hope.<img>

Check this out....I got a 1988 F150 with a 300cui 6 cylinder/Feul injection engine that has been previously rebuilt recently and has the feul injected intake with the smog to the head , whoose head I'm attempting to replace.
I have already removed the head that was on this block and purchased a reman. head for this year model block, only to find out that there are basically(don't quote me on this) two different styles that can go on the 1988 300 block(1986-1988 )that has a feul injected intake.

Everything was going fine until I realized that the 1988 head I bought has STUDS for the Rocker arms. The head that I removed had BOLT ON Rocker arms. I did some research and ....The ONLY head That I could find with BOLT ON Rocker arms is the 1986 version with a I-6 carb intake manifold boltup(the same bolt patern as a Feul injection intake manifold...right?).Any way,They did'nt even have it in stock.

SO ,I've come to believe that the head that I removed is not a1988 300(/w smog injection to head) but an earlier version ... maybe a1986 300 head(/w smog injection to head) As the motor has been previously been rebuilt. AND I have no means of checking with the mechanic who did the work to see if he swapped the head or what? So....... to bypass all of the confusion this what I want to do......I want to use the head that I bought (1988) and get some rocker arms for it and bolt it up an'be done. which should work except one thing......... the push rod length . Can anyone tell me if there is any difference in the push rod length on the engine of these year models(1986 to 1988) in conjunction with the head that goes on the 300 6cyl. with smog injected to the head ,and with feul injected intake manifold? What DO you guys Make of all of this ?

Thanks,

sight

you can verify the head taken off by looking at the part numbers, that start with the letter E (80's) and the next number will be the year.

As far as I know, all O.E. efi heads used pedastel mount rockers (or bolt down). The only difference being, some efi heads had air injection in the head, some did not.

Carb heads were stud mount, only exception being, around the time ford switched from carb to efi, some of the carbed heads ended up with pedastel mount (bolt down).

Compare the combustion chambers of each head, the efi and carb are noticably different. The efi will have a definite heart shape.

Sounds to me like the NEW 88 head, if it is an efi head, was converted to stud mount and if that is true, you'll need to look into guideplates.
