I Just Saw I Pic Of An Xlt With Painted Cladding That Matched The Vehicle. Im Unfamilier With Piant And Bodywork. Didnt Think You Could Do That With The Cladding Surfice. Has Anyone Ever Seen That, And How Does It Look.
it looks great, but is a lot of work and pricey. you can't just spray paint over the pastic. you have to seal it, fill it, prime it then shoot a 2 stage paint. plan on 2,000.00-2,500.00 to have it done. the ford paint is running 650.00 a gallon.
You can try to do it yourself, I did mine myself. I didn't fill the cladding, I added a few extra coats of base and clear. I used adhesive promoter/primer for plastic and flex additive in the clear. All the products that I used were PPG. I spent less than $300.00 for the material and used a friends homemade spray booth. You can look at my gallery to see the end result and an idea of how yours would look.
Yea, there is no textur to it anymore with the addition of extra coats of base and clear.
I posted a step by step process of the whole procedure with all the materials I used. Just do a search of my prior posts.
Mine are painted also, and they are as smooth as the regular paint on the doors. Check my gallery for pics...
I guess the paint they used was pretty high quality because someone ran into the driver's door cladding and it put about a 1" V-shaped cut in the plastic, but the paint is completely intact and no cracking or peeling.
I think the solid color looks a lot better than the black cladding, especially on a lighter colored vehicle. The Navi's and Limited Edition Expy's are all one color, FWIW...
Sorry, not sure, it was a dealer custom job when new, and I bought it used. I'm pretty sure the dealer had it farmed out to whatever paint and body shop they use.
I would just shop around and get some estimates. I had a 1993 GT that was blue on grey and I had the bottom painted to match for under $1000, and that was a combination of plastic and sheetmetal.
I would think you could get it done pretty reasonably. The most expensive part would be the bumpers I would think, since they will probably have to be removed. The other pieces should be pretty easy since you can just pop them off and paint 'em.
