Here is my next problem. Once in a while when I go to start my truck, the starter spins against the flywheel and does not engage. The person I bought it from had always had the problem. He had the starter rebuilt and the flywheel replaced and it still does it. My mechanic said there are shims and a mid-plate? My truck has niether. It only does it I would say 1 out of 20 to 30 starts. What is it, and how do I fix it? Also, is a gear reduction starter a good investment?
TIA
Todd
ok first thing is disconnect ground cables from batteries . next remove starter . then turn engine over by hand ,( two people is best ) use socket on center crankshaft bolt and turn clockwise only , using flashlight check the teeth on ring gear as you turn the engine , if all the teeth are good then just buy a new starter , no shims etc...
Mine has the same problem, it used to be once a month now it is getting worse. I haven't investegated into it yet but i'm guessing the starter cause if the flywheel you would manualy turn the engine by hand to get it past the spot.
if the ring gear looks good I would go by a new starter from a parts store. Rebuild shops can be kinda questionable some times.
A new starter might be the ticket... I use both reduction( Mitsubishi) and direct drive (Delco) starters... The reduction one will last longer and is double the price, but they both seem to do the same job ....
Also mine does the same thing every once in a awhile.. But it has been doing it for the last 10 years and my ring gear is fine.. The starter just hits tooth to tooth and screeches, I let go of the ignition switch and try again and it works fine...
I have been running a gear reduction on both of my 6.9's for over 2 years now . They work great . I bought mine from a place on ebay called dbelectrical for $135.00 including shipping .
If the problem still exists after a flywheel change then change the starter unless youcan get the right shims........there are shims for the Mitsubishi but they are between the starter solenoid and nose piece to pull the bendix in further for better enguagements.
I can only recomment the Mitubishi gear reduction from either Azone stores or the web page above. Apparently the newer style on the web page requies much more power so I have read and may become a problem if older batteries are used.
CF DRG the Mitstubishi has shim adjustments as to the throw of the bendix for correct engagement, but you have to remove the starter mounted solenoid and place them between the solenoid and the body of the starter. This moves the solenoid back and forces the bendix further forward into the teeth.
Never had a problem on my 93 with 210k on it now, original starter.
My 91 has done this to me about once a month since I bought it, checked the gear when I did some tranny work in December and it is fine. The last guy I bought it from just put in two new starters in the last 12 month.
Both trucks use Mitsubishi starters.
There may be a problem with some of the aftermarket/rebuilt starters being sold.
The only other thing I could think of is the batteries on the 91 are getting old and and the battery cables will need replacing one of these days soon. Could also explain why the truck does not fire immediately and it takes some cranking to get her going. (Checked the glowplug system and the fuel system. - all ok.)
