I just purchased a 2003 F-150, to replace my 1989 F-150 which served me well for 16 years!
What's the deal with these Securilock keys? I am a SCUBA diver and usually put my key up the sleeve of my wetsuit. This has worked just fine for my solid-metal 89 keys, but I am concerned there are some sort of smarts built into the Securilock key that will not react well to salt water.
Am I correct that immersion in salt water will ruin the key?
Make a copy of that PATS system key and use it to drive your vehicle. Lock the original 2 keys in a safe etc. You need the original keys to program a replacement. With the original keys you can spend $30 for a key and program it yourself. Without the originals it costs mega $$$ at the dealer. Also make that regular key and use it to open the doors or trunk where you stash your chip key.
I do not believe the salt water will hurt the key. I have not taken a Ford one apart yet, though if it works like other keys, it is just a tiny antenna and chip (sometimes powered by ant. when it vibrates) buried within epoxy. No way to harm it.
You can get those keys at your local locksmiths for under $60. I too just bought a 2003 f-150 and only got one key...so i went to the local locksmith....they programed and cut a key for $54.
