Hey all.
I just bought a test light from Matco Tools, thats 6.12,24 volt able. It has a circut that tells if the wire your testing is a negitive or a positive or switches when something is aactivated. It has a 12 foot coil lead wire that is put on the battery of what your working on, then test your wires. A red or green led will light up to show if the wire is a power or ground wire. It cost about 45 dollars with tax.
one step up from that is the power probe. As well as being a test light that shows power or ground it has a built in ground lead and with the push of a button you can supply power or ground to a circuit. Comes with battery clamps and cigarette light plug. Great for wiring lights. Plus it is lit at the tip and has a 19' cable plus a 20' extension. http://www.powerprobe.com/
I have some off brand led test light it is very nice and also has red and green leds. The only problem with them that I have ran into with it and maybe this is only 24 volt systmems that they are very senstive. The last time I had a problem with this was an ether start switch which ran through a sensor and the sensor let enough power through to light the led. A little frustrating when it should have worked so I found a old style bulb one that draws more amps. Then the light did not come on and had to replace the sensor. Just something to think about even though I grab my led test light first.
I got the Mac LED test light 6 years ago for $35. It's got 2, red/green LED's in it, a pos and neg alligator clip, and does 6, 12 and 24 volt. It tells me if it's hooked up properly, if there's power or ground, etc.
Some guys call it a "logic probe".
Would have got the Snap On, but they didn't have it yet (back then).
