I installed a flowmaster 40 series muffler with a turndown. I am not sure i like the sound. Everything is stock, with about 2-2.5' of pipe from the cat conv. to the flowmaster. With the 1988 f150 having 180,000 miles, i am wondering if a new cat. converter and pipe would make it sound better. Or extending it back to the back of the truck. The motor has 20,000 miles, stock air system(new filters).
Right now its a deep hum in the cab in 3rd gear. Accelerating i like the sound, but on cruise or going steady, the sound seems too intense, and sounds old. Too many people asking if i just cut the muffler off
The best thing to improve the sound is to lengthen your tailpipe.
I initially had both pipes exiting before the rear passenger wheel on my delta flow 40. I liked the sound OK, but not exactly what I wanted. After a time I realized that my wheel finish was dulling, so I extended the tail pipe out behind out both rear tires. Made the sound deeper and closer to what I was looking for. If I were to change anything, I'd get a super 40 muffler.
