I have this issue, hope for some feedback, I have an 04 F250 supercrew.
I've done some minor mods which are: flowmaster muffler and a dual split off left and right behind each rear tire, K&N filter for the airbox. now, the only mod I've done to the large *** cone shaped airbox is exposed it to more air flow , meaning, I cut off the half the cone and exposing the K&N filter (which is of course shaped like a cone itself) this mod looks very similar to the high air flow mods I see for sale by various vendors where they have the filter fully exposed.
I've done no map changes nor anything else other than plug changes. My truck has only 23k on it, since I've done the mods, truck has been running very good. Now, I had to park it for an extended road trip i'm on, now my little icon engine light is on, thus far, the manual says emission issue. I find it hard to believe that my mods to the airbox may be the culprit. If I go to the dealer for maybe a warranty issue, they'll see my mods and say this will void the warranty. Any suggestions? Again, the truck runs like it should,
why would you cut the cold air intake to suck in warm air? the stock intake flows more than the engine needs. cutting it just draws in warm air and lessens power. the MAF sensor is proably dirty. you can clean it.
check out www.bobistheoilguy.com for results of a test he did comparing K&N filters vs the OEM paper type. The K&N's don't provide that much extra flow. In his experiment it was 0.14% more (like I said, not much) and the K&N doesn't do as good of a job filtering the air. So basically, your sucking in oil droplets from the K&N, which gets all over your MAF causing issues. And you get the nice bonus of sucking in more dirt particles into your engine for basically no performance gain in every day vehicles. Marketing hype is a strong force! I used to run a K&N until I read this well done research. My gas mileage didn't change when going back to the OEM Motorcraft filter. Check out the article...
