This is a great forum, I check it out for info almost every day. I have a 2002 F-350 7.3 4wd, single rear wheel with a 3.5 lift and 33s on welds, with a service bed and a 70 gal fuel cell. On the scales its 9,986 lbs. I have 4" turbo out exhaust with a flowmaster muffler and a Dr. Performace predator module from Summit Racing (70hp 130tq). I tow 11,000 lbs with this combo all the time in the mountains and when I am foot to the wood on long grades under the hood gets louder. Like the secondaries opening on a 4 barrel carb. or something like that. I have no exhaust temp. gauge, do you guys think I need one. The chip says lower EGTs. The truck didn't sound like this before the chip was put in. I am also worried about the auto. trans. I have 37,000 miles on the truck and I am on my third trans. from Ford.
Thanks guys
In my opinion you need to do at least the following: 1) transmission temperature gauge and pyrometer, 2) a large (40K lb rating) auxiliary transmission cooler, and 3) a shift kit for the transmission. I think the sound you are hearing when pulling long grades with your foot into it is the cooling system working hard to cool everything down. I basically have this setup with a DP PCM (+40 HP) and it regularly pulls 10K loads over the Sierras (7200') on I-80 like it wasn't there. I never have transmission temps above 175 degrees unless I have that load on a very steep dirt road so my speed is in the single-digits. I wish I had bought a transmission cooler with a thermostatic fan for those occasions.
I'm sure others, with more knowledge, will point you in the right direction...
Thanks for the reply nlemerise, thats where I do all of my driving is in the sierras.I think you are right about getting a pyrometer and a trans cooler.I just thought that I didnt need it with my mild mods I have.I think I will be back at ford for a new trans.soon because its shifting funny and when I pull steep grades at slow speeds it starts leaking out of the front pump seal. But only at say 30mph or slower and the trans.temp gauge never gets passed normal.I have even put my hand in the fluild spilling out the front when it does it and it is not hot.
If I were in need of a new transmission for my mule, I would NOT get one from Ford...I'd look at Monsterbox or similar after-market (these tranny's are nearly bullet-proof). I don't believe the transmission temp gauge (if it is a stock one) actually measures temp...it uses a sending unit like the stock oil pressure gauge. Better than nothing, but just barely. Are you located at Hirschdale area around Truckee?
well you are deffinently over heating your transmission (fluid puking out of it), you fluid is probably toasted and should be changed. even with you "mild" mods if you are putting your foot to the floor while towing 11,000 up even a slight grade i garantee your EGTS are way past safe. i hope you havent done too much damage to your truck already...YOU NEED GAUGES!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the info.Since I got the chip I only run about half thottle when towing up hills, but the motor still sounds like its working pretty hard.I better get my butt to summit and get one now.The deal on the trans. is I still have 1.5 years of warranty on it.Jones west ford basicly told me they couldnt do anything for me so just blow it up again.Man I thought I was ok with the EGTs with 4" exhaust & a 70hp chip,Iguess not.

thanks again.
By the way I do live in hirschdale
my tow program is a 50 hp tune. i have the same mods you do plus some additional ones to lower EGT even further. i have a 2500# lance truck camper and a 4000# boat. if i where to floor it up a hill while loaded i would exceed 1250* (max safe EGT) in about 30-60 seconds. you really got to watch it.
Me again, not to sound really stupid but is there a differance between a pyrometer and a plain exhaust temp. gauge.I put a edge chip in my bosses 7.3 and I put the senser in the back of the manifold. Is that a good spot?
the Pyrometer is a technical name for the Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor. the actual part you put in the manifold is called a Thermocouple. here is where i put mine, looking up at the left manifold from under the center of the transmission.
Thanks for the pic strok_it7.3 and the education on the terms.I am new to the diesel world but I love it and you guys are a big help.Better go get my gauge soon.

You ought to look at the A-pillar gauge cluster...real easy to see when you are busy pulling big weight up the mountains.
