hi i have a 99 ranger xlt with the 2.5 liter engine and i was wondering if anyone has any ideas tips on how to get more power out of it this truck is a weakling nothing crazy i just want a little more power any ideas would help alot
You could get rid of the stock breather box, but if not, get a stock K+N replacement. Before you put it in, remove the the breather box. Get rid of the 'air horn' and the deflector too. Get yourself a 2 -1/2" hole saw, and drill a hole in the front of the box parallel to factory hole. not right on the factory hole , but even distance between the factory one and the edge of the box. Now you want to do the same to the side that would face the fender, close to the center or so. DO NOT DRILL THE SIDE FACING THE ENGINE!!! You'll draw in hot air. Put your box back in, install your filter, snap it shut and take it for a ride. This is just one cheap way to get power. By the way, the extra noise is normal, and you'll get used to it....
1) Intake - around $150-250
2) Exaust - Anywhere from $140-500
3) Electric fan - $150-300
4) Throttle body stack - $100
5) TURBO - It'll end up costing around $2,500, but you'll get up to 400hp out of it.
Also, look under the dash at your accelerator pedal and see how much slack you have at idle positon. The cable stretches over time. Mine had roughly an 1-1/8" of slack. I went to the hardware store and bought those crimp style metal" cable stays" to take up the slack. You put them on the excess cable that is hanging out of the firewall while you hold the top of the pedal where the cable comes through the top of the pedal against the the fiewall. I had my brother hold the pedal, while I GENTLY pulled on the cable with pliers in one hand and put the cable stays on the cable between the pedal top and the end of the cable stop on the end of the cable. You don't want it too tight, so leave a little slack, but snug so you CAN open your throttle body so it is most effective. When I bought my truck , it lagged some to get up to speed on the highway (did not notice when I test drove), but now it has great throttle response, and gets up to speed really great for a 4-banger. Since I also did my air box, my younger daughter thinks my Ranger really MOVES now. I think its a pretty decent improvement over the way it was...
