I have a 1978 F150 Custom short bed. Awsome truck. Owned for over 15 years.
I have a power steering problem. Not turning on a dime as it once did. Sluggish, hard to turn like a manual steering, also steering wheel squeeks and nothing stops it.
Replaced belt, retightened......
Pump seems to be okay but I did notice a loose tube fitting that does not seem to engage.
cavitated pump creating air in the system? i had one do that and it only took just a short drive- 25 miles- for it to eat the seals and destroy the gear box too.... sounds like the same thing mine did.. jmo
What do you mean the steering wheel squeaks? A squeak in the steering wheel has nothing to do with the belt or the pump, it could be a bad bearing or other worn parts in the column. Sluggish could be low fluid levels, bad alignment, or even bad kingpins. Do not over-tighten the belt or you will destroy the pump bearings.
I know that the steering wheel has nothing to do with the belt or pump. That is a slightly new annoying problem. checked levels, belt is tightened as specified, kingpins are in good shape.
Could the loose tube prevent pressure to build thus allowing for optimal pump operation?
aerating the oil in the system and not allowing proper pressure to build... make sure all the connections are tight then run it a bit and work the steering, then check the oil. is it foamy at all? if so, you've still got air in the system...
