Auto Transmission question

I was wondering if there's really any difference between column mounted autos or the 'stick' type ones? I'd take a guess that maybe the stick-type ones are closer to the transmission/don't have to go through column, which maybe would be less parts to go wrong?

No, no real difference.

Far as I know, they both use the same parts, just one is closer to the tranny. no less to go wrong.

The only real difference is in the linkage. The floor mounted shifters use a cable instead of rods, so they are actually more prone to breaking because cables freeze up, where if you keep the linkages greased they'll last forever.
