i actually was going to put a JD (john deere) DT466 in a truck. i had access to one at the time but they are too wanted so it's gone now. that would have been wild, a deere powered ford...hmmm.
before I bought my 84f250 6.9 4x4 from a very good friend of mine, he was in the process of installing the cummings...he bought the "kit" for the conversion, well now I own the truck and the conversion kit...what I dont have is the $8,000.00 to install the cummings and even if I did its a lot of work, never mind how the economics doesnt justify it.
BC, just lettin u know theres no G in cummins. If you dont want that kit, and are willing to give it away id be willing to pay for shipping, and if your selling it if its reasonable i might buy it from you. If i get a new truck, i might find me an old cummins and drop it in my 83, around here u can find them for cheap and i think itd be fun to build. I havent decided yet but if you need to get rid of it jus lemme know

Not sure where this figure comes from unless you plan on hiring someone to do all the work, but in the end, it isn't all that bad. If you have the motor mounts and everything to put it in, it actually is not much harder than the average motor replacement. The driveshafts aren't that hard to figure out, nor all that expensive to have reworked. If you don't have 3.54 rears though, a straight 1:1 trans will be a problem.
your are right, this $8000.00 is the cost of a shop doing the work...I consider myself a backyard mechanic and theres almost nothing I wont try but I do not the facilities to re & re an engine.
ok so i tore the crew cab apart and pulled out the 7.3...so now i am ready for the cummins and trans. i called around and the engine and trans is going to cost me $6500. not exactly what i was expecting. i am looking for more places to call, and maybe i can find somethin a little cheaper?
Keep an eye on ebay, they sell there for 1/3 that cost. Trying to get from a salvage yuard will typically be higher than the regular market is selling them for lately. I have seen whole trucks go for under $3000, sometimes about $2000. I picked my wreck up for $2800 on ebay.
you have seen what on there? the cummins or the trans for that price? the cummins is around $2500 here at the local yards, but the transis the same price plus the core fee of $1500. but no i havent checked at DTR or TDR yet, i kind of want to be able to go look at the engine and trans in person so that i can check them out.
Private deals tend to be less than the yards want, plus no core fees. The trick is finding one close enough you don't have to take a week off to get to it... If you wanted a road trip to Texas, I'm sure you'll find a number of complete rigs there, see them regularly advertised in some form or fashion there.. My truck came from central Illinois, but also had the Gearvedors unit on it too, made it even more worth the money.
ebay: 8024752900 bus motor in Wisconsin
8048585146 NV4500 in Arkansas... current price is beyond a steal...
8048594372 4wd same location, this guy regularly sells Dodge cummins parts, bought a few from him myself
8048783135 another 4wd trans in Wi

Turbo the IDI. First all in all it will be cheaper. Plus, the cummins 12v doesn't have that much more power than a non turbo IDI. The 24v cummins is awesome, but my dad owns a 93 1 ton cummins, and my 84 3/4 ton non turbo 6.9 IDI pulls as good as it does, granted the cummins get 20 mpg while I get 16, while towing it gets 16 and I get 8, so look at it your way. In fact, with a heavy load behind the dodge I can't even shift into high gear, granted the 84 doesn't have a high gear, but the cummins in 4th will only run 60 mph while the ford in 4th runs 80.

After injectors, pump tweaks, and a turbo, the Cummins would make twice it's original power.
