CD install questions

I have an '87 f-150. It has the factory AM/FM. I want to add a CD player but I don't see the point in paying someone to install it. I was at wal-mart today and I found a CD player I liked. I started looking at the install kits. How hard would it be to install it my self and what do I need. The box said I would need a din tool. The only one walmart had was for '03 and up fords. Any advice would be nice.
thanks

All the din tool is, is a u shaped tool that goes into the two holes on the side of the factory deck. one tool per side. push them in until they click, then try to pry them away from each other a little and pull out. the deck will come out with them. then, all you have to do is get a harness kit at walmart, splice it onto the new deck and plug it in.

It's really easy, just make sure you don't break the wrong tabs off of the mounting kit. This is quite easy to do as the book is labeled wrong. You'll need the wiring kit for 1986 and up NON premium sound. It has two long connectors, one is black the other is grey.

actually, the F-series PUs didn't use that setup until the bodystyle change in 92. earlier models are even easier. gently pry on the trim piece that surrounds the HVAC and stereo controls. it'll pop out pretty easy. then just unboplt the 4 screws holding in the stereo. unplug the harnesses and you're done with the removal.

install is just a matter of picking up an adapter kit (wal-mart's is just fine) an the harness adapter. it's a pretty easy DIY job. feel free to PM me if you need specific help.

good luck!

Mike

I wouldn't spend any mondy for the tool to remove the radio until you pry off the trim and see that you need it. My '88 F-150 uses four screws that holds in the factory radio.
Good luck,
Jerry

you will probably also need to trim the face plate to fit the new c d player.

rather than buying any tool, bend a piece of wire coat hanger to suit your needs.

which plate are you talking about? the trim piece that surrounds the radio/HVAC? i've had multiple decks in this era of truck and have NEVER had to trim anything. only thing that ever requires trimming is the adapter kit bc it's a somewhat universal kit that comes with a bunch of extra tabs you don't need.

and low92flareside: like i said, his truck shouldn't even need the stereo removal tool you guys use.

Yeah, I wouldn't trim the HVAC trim piece either. I trimmed the trim ring for the radio so that it would attach to the radio over the truck trim piece. That's confusing, I know .... to many "trim" pieces

yeah, no worries. the coat hanger trick is a good idea, though (for the steros that use the hoop tools).

Coat hanger works well. I bought the tools once and was glad I did. They work much better.
