Another power steering question
I have a 76 F250 highboy with a 360. I have converted the power assist to full time power steering a couple of years ago. My problem is only when the truck is in idle. The tires are a bear to move. It seems that their is not enough pressure with the motor only in idle. I've tried to increase the idle, no luck. It drives fine when truck is rolling or rpm's are up. The pump is new (rebuilt) and hoses have also been replaced. The system is properly bled. I can put the truck in neutral, rev the engine and the wheels turn fine. What is the pressure supposed to be and is there a pressure gauge you can buy? Any help would be appreciated.

Is the belt loose? The pump produces VOLUME not pressure. The load on the system or the pressure relief determines pressure. If you move the wheels slowly do they turn? If the pump is worn out it will not produce enough volume to build system pressure with the internal leaks inherent in the system. Any hydraulic shop can check the pressure.

The belt is tight. You can turn the wheels but with great difficulty. As I said I've recently replaced the pump when my old one sprung a leak. But it did the same thing when the truck was sitting I could hardly move the wheel. I thought the leak was part of the problem but I guess not. When you come to a quick stop or slow down while turning the wheel it goes stiff as the RPM's drop to near idle.
