So what is the best ( and quickest ) starting Procedure for a cold IDI 7.3L? I think my manual say's to depress the pedal half way to the floor ( and hold till it starts) for a temp. above 32F, and below 32F you depress it all the way to the floor till it starts. Is this the best way to get the quickest start?
Yes the manual is correct, allowing the GP WTS light to cycle twice is also a good point too. IE.. turn ignition on until the WTS goes out, turn ignition off and on again then do the start as normal.
If you have the manual GP switch couldn't you just hold the switch on longer rather then cycle two times. What's the difference? Will that brief hesitation prevent the GP's from frying?
I would not hold the manual gp switch longer, I cycle mine twice (2 x 5 seconds) with about 5 seconds in between when it is really cold (below freezing). At 32 the truck starts with just one cycle, I guess I'm a little paranoid about those melted tips!
DW you could probably do several 5 second burst with no damage but one 10 second done at the wrong time could fry some GPs. My controller stays on for 15+ seconds at 20*f and I will still do a second burst to help the starter.
PLC7.3,
Thanks for the reply. I have the manual switch and fortunately my truck starts afters setting for weeks with a count to 5 one time, I was just curious. I installed some of those "double duty" GP's (or whatever they're called) last summer. They work excellent. len
