My buddy at school has a 00 ford focus. Today after school he was showing me how it idles, and its terrible. Revs around normal and then all of a sudden out of no where it just kind of dies. I am assuming it is a idle air control valve, but one thing is, where is it located? And can you just clean them out? Anyone know?
Don't know this model, but in general the IAC is in the Throttle body. Usually it is centered in the middle bottom of the throat. There is usually a small hole(pencil size?) just before where the throttle blade closes if my memory is correct.
The ones I have seen, a chebby, was kind of a flapper valve on a ring that opened and closed the air passage in the throttle body.
Use a good Throttle body cleaner. You probably need to use one that is safe for the plastic coating that is becoming more common in throttle bodies.
Best bet is to look at a shop manual or maybe a Chiltons/Haynes to see what this looks like.
I cleaned the IAC on my Ranger, and it has been OK for the last month or so. I used a spray bottle of TB cleaner, and cleaned it out with that as best I could, and then hit it with a shot of WD-40. (I think I read that somewhere, I wouldn't have thought of it on my own.)
Thing is, though, mine was just stuck- the truck wouldn't idle at all when it was cold. Once it was warm, it idled OK. I don't really know whether that makes a difference in whether the fix will work or not.
