Vehicle is a 1991 Aerostar AWD 4.0 DIS.
I posted this awhile back, lost my way and I'm back to ask for more help.
Okay I need to pick some Ford electronics guru's brains. The short of it is I have a '91 Aerostar with DIS coil pack system. I've been having a code come up that says 'Momentary Loss of PIP signal' which will cause the ignition to drop out which makes the vehicle go KAWHAM like the torque converter unlocked and locked back up, scares the crap out of you. Gauges don't drop out like if it lost power and it came back on. It gets progressively worse and you can't come back up to speed.
I have tried the 'unhook the 4X4 module under the drivers seat', didn't change. Tranny had been flushe several months prior to this happening. The crank sensor is brand new from FORD.
So I need to know have any of you run into this? Or heard of it? My mech thinks it is the EDIS module but at $250-$350 for one I have to find out if this can get tested first. I may have to pull the one off my '92 Vic if they're compatable and see if that's it.
So any help I can get is very much appreciated and thank you in advance.
Duane
This will be posted in the ignition forum also so please don't move this one.
your 91 is OBDI EEC-IV...to diagnose without a ECU scanner- put ECU in continous monitor aka wiggle test mode...test main culprits> wiring connections of ECU & ignition system, grounds, crank position sensor, ignition control unit and coil pack
see page 4-17 of Chilton's or search Aero forum
any stored codes?
your mech. is in profit feed the kids mode

Before jumping into a new EDIS unit, look for any obvious problems with the crankshaft position sensor. Its a magnetic pick up mounted about the 10:00 position near the front crankshaft pulley with an electrical connection to it. You could have worn/frayed wires, loose connector, grease/dirt buildup on the sensor or pulley surface. From experiences on this forum, the EDIS unit and coil pack are fairly bulletproof.
I have a spare edis from a 1991 4x4 exploder which I think is the same as on the aero, I have already used the coil pack from it on my aero and it worked ok, If you want it and will pay postage you are quite welcome to it just get my email from my profile and let me know.

I'll do that, give a couple of days I'm a second shifter and drive 90 miles a day round trip to work. So I only have a couple of hours a day to wake up and get motovated.
I replaced the crank sensor because it was covered in oil and dirt, I figured some had worked up inside and was cause momentary loss of signal. The connector looked good cleaned it anyway. Followed it up as far as I could and could find no fraying. I checked the connector on the EDIS and it was clean with that grease\coating still in it. The mechanic I took it to charged $35 for a scan(he doesn't have the best equipment) and 1 hour labor at 440 shop rate. So I did not get beatup bad. Interestingly he took it out a test drove it and it would not act up????? So I will definately be going for cbr900s module and keep at it. When I luck onto something I will pass on the info.
Many thanks guys, it does help to have people to 'talk' to.
Before replacing anything, please get the codes read and come back with the acutal codes, not descriptions. That will help pinpoint it easier, and it will be cheaper on you than replacing good parts.
68Torino ,
forgot to say, welcome to Aero forum
see u have a '68 Torino, 428 CJ? I had a '70 T NW 429 CJ with the air intake hood
what a blacktop monster, 425 hp and would get 18 mpg at 80 mph freeway.
Those were the days when Ford Built Real Tough Cars, wonder why they called them muscle cars, nursing college gf at time couldn't drive it, she couldn't push and hold in the clutch.
love my Aero as much as that T NW, just as reliable and a great hwy cruiser
see u have the Aero PIP problem well on the way to solution, i damaged one with logging road debris, replaced and still had problems with wiring & connector until i replaced
I had a 1968 Torino Formal Roof two door no post. 302 2bbl auto. Body was striaght, very little rust, needed carpet. Sweet ride on the highway. Oldest son now has it. It sits for now while he completes Robotics school, starts making good money and restores it. HE wants to put an all aluminum 427 genisis motor in it. We're still argueing that one. I say a 'new' warmed over 302 would be better. We'll see.
As for codes all I have is a sunpro scanner which came up with a code 14....The Electronic Assembly (ECA) has detected a intermittent loss of Profile Ignition Pick-up (PIP) signal during recent operation. I get it back tomorrow and I'll pull codes again and see what it says.
Hey cbr900 let me know your price and a postal money order is on the way

Then to add insult to injury looks like I need to put a new IAC on my '89 F250 sheesh. Idles between 1500 and 2500 depending what mood it's in. Yup sprayed out the TB and IAC no change. I work with no garage so if I get a good day I'll pull codes on Big Blue.
