I have a 1961 F-100 and I am going to put a non H.O. 5.0 and AOD from a 88' Thunderbird that I already have. I was wondering if you have done this what was involved? Did you get a special wire harness? If you can let me know the major steps taken to do this swap.
Thanks
Ive been looking to do just that but havent started yet. There is a great article in the specs/article section at the top of the page. Good luck and take lots of pics.
It is a great guide for anyone wanting to do the swap. I saved it and printed it out for my install later. By the way it's in the engine section of the article/specs area if you haven't found it yet. It's down towards the bottom of the list. As far as wiring goes, you can either use & modify the factory ford harness or use a aftermarket wiring set up such as a painless wiring kit (nice stuff but pricey). Ford Racing Performance Parts used to sell a great kit with all the wiring you needed plus any relays or sensors you might need for a very reasonable price. But just like everything else they used to sell that people really wanted to buy and that sold for a reasonable cost, they dropped it. They just don't seem to be interested in selling much that has anything to do with any of their engines that have pushrods. You can buy a 03 blown cobra motor for $11,500 though.(he says sarcastically) Needless to say there's not many takers on that! Anyway, good luck on your 5.0/AOD swap. I think you'll be pleased with the way it turns out.
We used 5.0L/AOD in my son's 63. We wimped out on the EFI and installed a aluminum intake and Holley 600. Had to use a Lokar kickdown cable for the AOD though. I wanted him to learn the basics of hotrodding but not be intimidated with all that wiring on his first project. He had plenty to focus on this time around. It has been a great truck for him for almost 5 years now.
Painless Performance, Ron Francis, and the Detail Zone all make a wiring harness for this EFI swap. They add a cost to the project but when you consider $3/gallon gas and the increased MPG of EFI, it should pay for itself. In my case, subtract the purchase price of the intake and carb and it gets paid off sooner.
