Ok, I've come upon what I hope to be a good way to make a little money. I'm going to try and research it online but I thought I'd run it by some of you guys and see if ya'll had any knowledge about what i'm thinking.
It occurred to me that we have lots of old parts around the house that aren't good for much other than wheel blocks. Well if you buy a new starter or alt. or whatever, there is a core charge. Sometimes as high as 20 bucks or whatever. Well the guy at Autozone told me they take the core we give them and send it back to the rebuilder and they rebuild it and clean it and all. Well apparently they make some money there for the cores they send back. So my thinking was why not cut out the middle man and go to the source directly and try and sell back all the old alternators, starters, steering columns and and such that are just junking up our place? Anyone else do this or thought of this or tried this? Sure would give me good incentive to clean up the place if it was to make money.

Good idea JD, but somehow I suspect when you find out what the reman guy will give you for the cores, the shine will melt right off your idea. If you have 3-500 it could make a difference.
But check it out anyway.

In the cool still quiet of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
I think you would have a better chance of trying to find a scrap guy that will give you a little cash for them. I tried to do the same thing when I was cleaning out the garage and nobody would budge. I had a scrap guy offer me some money for all of my old parts but he never came to collect so I just gave them to the parts store and told them to do what they gotta do just to get them out of my way. The look on their faces when I brought in the truckload of Ford Starters and alternators was all I needed.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
The rebuilders will buy some items, but only those which are profitable and in high demand, e.g. the heavy duty SBC starter. In my scrapyard days, we would fill oil drums with starters and alternators, many of them apparently near-new, and sell them by the pound as "breakage" to be shredded for the copper and other metals.
