recently when i was going over my truck i discovered a what looked like a light, but was covered with all sorts of electrical tape. this light is located in the middle of the cab on the outside over the middle of the rear window. does anyone know the name/part number of this light? my truck is a 1990 f150 XLT lariat. thanks.
That light is the bed light. When the interior lights are on either by the switch or a door being open, it lights up the bed. It's not really a useful light either, as it's not that bright, and they have a tendancy to leak in a horrible way, allowing water to collect inside the cab rotting out the rear window area as well.
Ford still sells the gasket though... just not the housing or the lens. Junkyard item if you'res is cracked or damaged.
The later years (which also fit), somewhere around 95 I think, had both a cab light as well as a brake light in the same housing.
