I just got a new 79 half ton xlt 4x4 It has ac tilt and cruise. The guy I bought it from said it had a new dash probably because of a wreck. The dash has a 73-74 jack sticker in the glove box door. The truck and interior is dark brown with tan on side and tan seats doorpanels and dash pad cover. the dash it self is a copper olive color. Is there any small things that a 79 dash would have different than a 73. Also the truck has dummy warning lights. Oil and voltage. Is it possible to cut the squares out carefully and mount some original guages to it and make the illumination lights shine on them. If this is possible what things are different like sending units and wiring. I do have an after market oil pressure guage below the dash will this still work if I put an original guage in?

Don't cut the gauge cluster. They came stock with full gauges. On E-bay there is a full cluster up for bid right now. just do a search under 'Ford truck'. It was listed within the past day or so.Good luck.

if your truck has the idiot light cluster, it will not have the wiring needed to run the stock type gauges the previous poster refered to. its alot easier, to mount some aftermarket mechanical gauges, as they will also be more accurate.

It also won't have the right sending units. The sending unit for oil pressure, for instance, is different for idiot lights and for gauges. You'll need to replace both the sending units and the gauge cluster.

Did just this swap on a 79 ex-Uhaul F350.
Change the oil sending unit, the plug that goes into the dash,
and add one wire for the ammeter.
The plug swap and the ammeter wire are the pain. My Haynes manual had the full schematic and plug diagram.
