Auto Vs. Manual
The Truck is a 1995 F-350 460EFI crewcab dually with 96,000 miles. Currently has a E4OD which seems to be getting weak. Will a 5 speed out
of a 1992 F-350 460EFI be a good swap. I pull a 35 foot 5th wheel. This
Truck and camper combo weighs in at 19,000 empty. (no kids, dogs, cats, H2O, food, ect. Would the manual 5 speed handle it in OD ? Would it handle it at all? Would it be more reliable than the auto? (run cooler ect.)
Thanks for all your input!
It's basically personal preference. If you don't mind shifting, go for it. You never have to worry about overheating a manual tranny, and they are much more reliable.
If not, you're going to be replacing clutches until you gain that experience. The clutch (when new) is a little forgiving of mistakes in an unloaded truck, but with 19K attached... it's not.
Personally, I prefer a manual. I like the low maintanence, the slightly better mileage, and having more control over what gear I'm in.
Sorry about the new thread. I still learning.

Btw, I like my 5-speed... flew 1400 miles to get it and drive it home... but I think the point above about driving a stick being a bit different with 19,000 pounds attached is a good one.
'Course, most everything about driving is a bit different with 19,000 pounds attached!
About 15 yeard ago I helped my Father put a 3208 v-8 Cat in his 83 supercab. We also installed an overdrive. I think he called it a brownie.
Anyway, he alway told me it was for running empty and not to use it towing.
I guess thats why I asked about the OD in the 5 speed.
Driving that truck was an EXPERENCE!!

had you guys swapped in a clar 7sp or something equally strong, you could have not worried about the tranny breaking.
For a short while, I was seriously considering building the 500cid stroker I'm working on out of a F500 429 block... which has the generic round bolt pattern, thus giving me access to "big truck" transmissions as well. Then I realized, driving a 7, 9, 15 speed unloaded was a pita
