On my 73 MerCruiser 302, i have a front sump oil pan, i have to because the axle is towards the rear of the engine, and has hit the rear sump on the 292 y-block. Just depends on your application.
My 77 f100 with a 302 in it has a front sump oil pan with the Dipstick in the timing cover. I don't know if the factory ones have the spot, but on the timing covers that summit sells they state they can be drilled so you can put the dipstick in there.
yeah sorry, its actually going into a 67' mustang. the pan i have is a front sump and there is the extra material on the timing cover for the dipstick.
If the timing cover looks as i think it does, There is a flat suface on the passanger side, where the dipstick does go through. I was going to do this but i picked up an extra 302 with a front sump oil pan/pickup and timing cover with a timing cover already installed. Depending on the year of the timing cover, there should be a provision for one.
Here is a pic with the dipstick in the front timing cover, hope this helps.
