Drove my truck Sat. and parked it. Went to get in it today turn the key and nothing. One click thats it. I thought dead battery or bad connection. Cleaned terminals even swapped batteries with a truck that was runnin' 2 seconds earlier. I figure starter but i'm not real familar with these trucks. Its a 1999 f-150 4wd with a 5.4. If it makes a difference i just replaced the #4 coil. Its never had any starting problems before so I don't know.
I only have to one key would getting one made off that one be the same. The connections on the starter feel okay. I"m going to pull it off tonight and see for sure.
I checked the fuses all are okay. Checked the wires on the starter of the four i checked two were hot and the other were not and nothing changed when the key was in the start position so i figured its the starter. How do I take the thing I can see the bolt on the bottom where are the others I've never even looked at this thing before tonight so I'm kinda ingnorant of everything. Thanks for the help.
This happened to me awhile back, and I yanked the starter out, cleaned all the connections and bench tested the starter. Put er back together and she works perfect, definatly worth a try! The bolts on the starter can be a pain, but once you do it once, its simple.
Richard the top bolt is pretty hard to get at. The bottom 2 are easy.
To remove the top one you'll have to figure out the right combination of socket and extensions. You'll have to just feel for the bolt because you probably won't be able to see it.
It's above the other 2 bolts. You should be able to feel it. I use a socket and extensions and go in from the front of the starter, between the motor mount and starter.
