We are now the proud owners of a 95 Windstar GL, it's got the stock radio with rear radio controls.
The problem is - The headphone indicator is lit on the radio and the only sound is coming out of the headphone connectors.
We don't have a user manual for the radio but there doesn't seem to be any button on the radio to turn off the headphone sockets. Non of the controls at the back seem to do much either.
I thought there would be some sort of over ride switch on the radio, but I can't find anything.
Yes, if I plug headphones in at the back then I can hear the radio through them. What I'd like to be able to do is to get sound through the speakers.
I used to own a newer explorer with rear headphone sockets and I'm sure there was a way to enable / disable them from the radio at the front - to stop the kids from messing with the controls.
The tuning buttons will still work, but you'll be able to hear the radio through the speakers in the cabin. If you want to diable it all then you need to find a radio that doesn't have the provisions for the rear controls.
I have a 97 Windstar with the same radio options that you have. I have 5 memory preset buttons numbered 1-5 (to select radio stations). Press buttons 1&3 at the same time to turn the rear controls on and off. On the rear controls there is a button left of the headphone jacks that says "Spkrs on/off". When the rear controls are on, you can turn the regular car speakers on and off with this button. Hope this helps. Would also suggest you get logged onto 'Automotive Forums' and get hooked into the Windstar site. There's about 5000+ posts there on Windstar Problems and how to fix them. There's a reason why Ford is not making any more mini-vans.
Well, the idea for pressing 1 & 3 together works!! - in as far as it gets rid of the headphone indicator on the radio - still no sound coming through the speakers though.
I'm sure it can't be much now as I know the radio works (via the headphones).
Maybe I'll pull the radio and take a look at the connectors, unless anyone has any better ideas?
My owner's manual makes no reference to the speakers not coming back on. I would hit the audio button and use the 'fade' and 'balance', making sure they are in the middle, and then slide them back and forth, thereby isolating each speaker and see if that makes any difference. I think maybe Pfogle may have a good point and that the 'spkr/on/off' switch on the rear control is bad. Maybe you could see if you could just unhook it and see if that works. Just curious: did you test the radio before you bought it? I always checked the radio along with all the other stuff cause I've got to have tunes.
I'm pretty sure that the rear control switch is the switch for the rear speakers. My aunt has this same rig, and the Aerostars had a similar (probably the same) system. Pop that rear switch panel off and check out the switch.
