i will give some advice that worked at my freinds car wash and another friends lawn service garage. you don't need "real" cameras, just stick somthing that looks like one on the corner of your house with a pretty little low intensity beam red light and put a camera somewhere else, some signs that say "property under surveilence. also security lights, i mean motion detector bright ones, are a real good deterrent. also the web video camera is great the one deltasoft was talking about, low costs, but its small, so the fake ones you biuld will be a detterent and the small one somewhere will be the actual in case someone does something. these things are low price to do, but well worth it in the long run.
va beach is a horrible place, i did some Navy schooling out there, decided i liked staying on little creek base more, my friend is stationed there and hates it, to many criminals and low lifes running around, sounds like to me its some hood kids that have found something thats an easy target, put this stuff up and hopefull they will just move off to someone elses spot. good luck!!
I'll consider that, bf250. Motion sensors are pretty cheap, too. I have a line on some surveillance equipment now (remember the friend that sells to the military?) He gave me a source, I'll have to see about the price. Like I said earlier, though, my neighborhood is actually nice. Never even a mean look from any of the residents. Never a cross word, either.
Sounds like the ideal breeding ground for a spoiled rotten punk...
How much do you know about the local kids? What do they do? What are they in to?
Not too much about the kids. I mean, you see all the typical types: pants down to their mid thigh (though I doubt any of those types are responsible, they are too busy holding their pants up...), your black wearing Goth types- typically introverts, a few rocker types with odd looking piercings, and then my kid's friends- mostly the jock type that are usually playing football/ basketball in the park. We have the types that try to look tough- you know, the guys that cross the street real slooooow and act like they aint scared of CRAP! There are a few that drive ricer types of cars, that travel waaay too fast in the neighborhood (IMO), who I have never yelled at, but do stare down on occassion... HMMMMM, now that might get someone PO'd. I'll have to watch them a little bit...
Thanks, Wolf, you've given me a little food for thought.
Stu
Have you talked to your neighbors? Maybe they know something. I know if anything were going on in my neighborhood, my wife and her lady friends would be all over it.
a great solution for those rice racers is to make your self a set of tire spikes for them, its great to hear them coming then run out the door and throw them into the street real quick and run back, they don't hit them all the time, but when they do!!! yes!!! then just wait awhile then go look around to make sure none are in your's or anyone elses tire path, and the idiots still don't get why they get a blow out around the same place all the time! also you can home made some portable street bumps out of hard rubber you can throw out there every now and then, they hate when they hit that big unsuspecting bump in the road!!! then there is always the paintball gun, stuff the exhaust pipe, pour stuff down the gas tank, and the good ole brake fluid on the paint.
Harbor Freight has security cameras for about $30 (B/W). Come with 50' of cable/power supply and have U/V LEDs built in - invisible light source that works in complete dark. This cam uses the same basic board that was used in CCTV a few years ago for $100+. Not the best, but great for night work.
I just got one of those from H.F. I sprung for the color model, has Infrared, cost about 40 bucks. It has 500 feet of cable with RCA jacks, picture and sound. You can plug into a VCR or TV, I have it hooked up to the TV tuner card in my computer. I also got (for 20 bucks) a wireless motion sensor that goes in the driveway and sounds an alarm in the house if anyone drives (or walks) in. Haven't found the best spot for the sensor though, gets a few false alarms. But if the receiver goes off I just click on the camera and see who just pulled into the driveway. I can also record to the hard drive with it, but haven't had any need to do so. Cheap home security...!
LOts of good advice here, but first I have to comment on this........
I got home, got the brick and walked around the neighborhood, looking at all the houses with similar looking bricks- it was broken at an angle, so I thought I'd try a little sleuthing. Didn't come up with much, but, hopefully, someone saw me and knows I'm looking.
You probably had about 40 neighbors call the police and report a lunatic walking around the "hood", carrying a brick, and wearing a big scowl on his face.
Now, to be serious. It's great to vent about what we'd all love to do to jerkbutts that vandalize anything of ours, but man ... be careful. You harm a hair on someone's head anymore and they, their lawyers, the ACLU and probably a thousand other "do-gooders" ( and I use that term loosely) would sue you for everything you have...including your broken brick. One thing good about venting is that you have the chance to beat heck out of them a dozen times and in a dozen different ways, without even leaving your living room.
I have a house I am remodeling that is in the country with a lot of distance between it and any other home. Someone stole 2 never used heating / AC units I had installed. Never found of course. You can go to wally-world and I'm sure other places and get a camera that hunters put around in the woods to take pictures of game. They're weather proof, take pictures using 35 MM film or digital format, use motion as a trip and have a built in flash, I think the one I got has about a 30 ft. trip and flash range. The one I bought cost $100.00 (digital) will download or view with computer (if you have XP it is plug and play) you can add an sd memory card for more storage of images, uses a 6 volt lantern battery it is on duty 24 / 7 battery lasts about 2-3 weeks (i'm sure it would vary with weather and number of trips of the camera, they cost about 5 bucks). I also put a video cctv camera beside it (not hooked up) and motion lights. The total cost for all was about $150.00. All of the items are usable for other things when no longer needed for this. Pretty cheap when compared to cost of replacement or repair.

I actually thought about that possibility. I even welcomed the thought that the police would come and question me (by this time, I was no longer seething with anger, just making my presence known). At least they would know I was serious, and maybe- just, maybe- they would see I'm not going to lie down and be a victim, and do a little investigating, like they should be doing already.
Thanks for all the info on the video stuff. I think I'll look into it this weekend. Especially like the auto camera idea. Heck, the flash would probably be enough to scare most dummies away...
Well, if you hadn't already handled the brick I would have suggested taking pics of it before touching it and then buying an inexpensive finger print dusting kit and lifting prints off of it. And keep all the evidence. You think it may be a kid doing it, but it may be an adult with nothing better to do with their time. The prints may have given you some leads? I wouldn't expect the cops would have spent their time or department money on fingerprinting it.
I beleive the best advice you've been given is setting up the motion activated security camera. I would think the initial cost would pay for itself if you caught the perp(s) and for the peace of mind.
On a side note, there was a store robbery in progress here in Tulsa a couple/three weeks ago. The owners security monitoring company notified him via phone, of a possible break in. Then he got out of bed logged on to his digital store cam and caught perps in action. Needless to say the cops got them. I would say a camera tied to the computer or internet would be a wise investment.
