My neighbor has a '89 150 with a straight 6 with a manual tranny. He just got home with his truck on a tow truck today. He said that he was driving about 60mph and all of the sudden, the whole rear end bounced up and locked up. He said that he thinks its the tranny. What ever it was, it was enough torque to lift the driver side of the engine up and disconnect the Power Steering return line. I'm thinkin that it torqued so hard that it broke the engine mount on that side. I can't tell just from looking at it.
But I'm trying to decide if it was the rear end or the tranny that locked up.
Disconnect the drive shaft from the axle. Jack up a wheel, if you can turn the axle by hand then it is OK. Then depress clutch and try to turn trans output shaft. You should find what the problem is.
Well, Before I start on all that. The truck will not go into gear. When the incident happened, the tranny popped into neutral and he couldn't get it into gear. And that's the way it is now. So, I asked about the oil in it and he said that it had a little leak but he really doesn't think that it was that low. So that's a big possibility of it seizing up.
The last time something like that happed to a car I was driving, the back end came up off the ground at 65KLM. Direct cause was the spider gears disintegrating.
