I know some of you have heard that "boink" sound come from under your rig. It sounds like a thin metal can expanding or contracting due to air pressure. I have heard this a number of times before ,after I shut the rig down, but Saturday after I filled the gas tank up..drove a mile and shut down..It boinked several times. So I am wondering if this is a fuel vapor pressure problem or what. And no I never top off the gas tank. This has been discussed before, but A search of boink yields nothing and a search of gas yields too much.
A Boink could mean any number of things.
Your cats or the heat shields around your exhaust sytem could be expanding and contracting.
Could be your tranny settling in after you shut the engine off and release the pressure in the valve body. This will happen if you routinely park on an incline and don't set the parking brake prior to letting off the service brake.
Could be your A/C system depressurizing.
Could be that cat that fell asleep on your tire and couldn't get out in time.
Maybe have someone pull the truck up and then you get out and crawl underneath (not really under, but low enough to see under and then have them shut the truck off and see if you can pinpoint the noise. I had a noise on my old Focus, so I put it on a rack and got under there with a rubber mallet and starting tapping away until I found the source, loose heatshield around the cat.
i have an 03 navigator that has the boink in cold weather after motor is turned off, and in the summer, there is a muffler rattle when the motor is turned off. but all i get is "no problem found" crap how did you get them to change it??
I have a 03 Expy which makes the "Boink" noise every once in a while. I have noticed that during cold weather it happens on a more regular basis. I agree with Onespeed, it seems to originate from the expansion and contraction of the exhaust system. Besides the "Boink" noise I don't think it will have any negative effect on your vehicle.
Yep I just had mine in for that same problem. It is from the exhaust expanding and contracting. The fix on my work order is warmed up exhaust and waited for sound. Once the sound was made, loosened all exhaust bolts and retightened. It seems to have worked. I have only heard the noise once since then and it was substantially quieter. More of a click.

i simply told them to. my dealer is great they really don't ask questions and just do the work i tell them about.
It was the muffler for me. The dealer had to call a regional guy to verify that some mufflers exhibit this behavior, but after they replaced the muffler, no more boinking noise
I bought the expy used and the dealer looked at Ford records on it and said that the muffler had been worked like hollowpoints was. Havent heard it since I posted, of course. The dealer also told me when it was origionally sold as this is the date your warranty starts.
