Coolant Question

I got a deal on four gallons of Caterpillar ELC. Is there anything wrong with using this in a '99.5 7.3? Thanks for any advise.

Do some reading on the subject. The debate is pretty heated. If you do decide to get it, you have to flush out the old stuff THOROUGHLY. The most damage occurs when different types of coolants are mixed.

Thanks, I am going to try it after a complete flush. I also just changed out water pump and added a coolant filter(no-chemical). I believe my water pump failure was due to too much additive, because the dried coolant residue was chalky. Will post any problems I encounter.

I've heard about using a "Coolant Filter". I'd like to hear from different people on this subject. I have an '03 6.0 Powerstroke. I don't know what kind of coolant it runs, but I've heard a filter grabs the contaminants and prolongs pump/engine life. Is this BS? Also, am I supposed to be adding some kind of additive to the coolant periodically? I've heard there can be some kind of chemical reaction and subsequent deterioration of parts without a specific additive.
Any help would be appreciated.

Smile Coolant Filter

All the 6.0's got "Ford Premium Gold" coolant from the factory - no additives required. Those of us that still have the std "green" coolants have to deal w/ adding SCA's to keep coolant cylinder wall cavitaton in check.

As for Coolant Filters - My 1st WP died & 45K. I'm on WP #2 now @ 60K - Installed a coolant filter when I switched the WP - My 1st filter clogged after about 60 days. When I cut it open I couldn't believe what was in the coolant even though I had flushed the system when I changed the WP.
I'm sold on coolant filters - BTW - Navistar puts coolant filters as std equip on both the 7.3 & 6.0 when they install this engine in med duty truck/bus apps.

If I had the time when I had replaced my WP I would have got the Navistar pump w/ the coolant filter built in rather than adding the aftermarket one as I did. When the pump goes on the Wife's F250 that's the way I'm going. I figure Navistar knows a bit more about these engines than Ford does since they designed them. They put the filters on for a reason - to extend the service life of the engine.

Does anybody have a picture of the Navistar water pump with the built-in coolant filter? I'd like to see exactly how it's mounted.

Smile Pictures

I'll see if I can get some pics next time I service one of our Navistar trucks.

Basically the pump is identical in external appearance to the ford pump except the spin on filter housing. The filter spins onto the pump on the lower RHS. (Same side as the t-stat housing) The lower hose would have to be changed to make it work on a 250/350. I remember reading somewhere on-line about a Napa hose P/N that will work with the N-star WP in a 250/350. Everything else should bolt right up to the N-star WP.
