WIld guessing is that maybe the light sensor is covered or once in a great while I have read that the sensor slips out of place and then the mirror goes dark.
I have the opposite problem. I have had 2 cars, a Lincoln and a chebby that had these mirros and neither of them was dark enough at night to suit my taste. I wish I could figure out how to make them darker.
