Planning to add a cruise control system to my 76 F350 supercab, camper special with 460/C6. I'm interested in recommendations; does anyone know anything about the one that's offered in the latest addition of "Obsolete Ford Parts" catalog. It's a servo drive unit--no vacuum connection required. I believe cost is around $230 - 250.
I've put two or three of the after market CC systems on different vehicles. It's not tough! I'm going to use the expansive one out of the JC Whitney Catalog.
The Computer controlld device should be better than the Vacuam device.
I had a Computer Controlled kit for my 82 Escort, but it still used Vacuam to operate the Servo. In the cold Alaskan winter mornings, the little Vacuam servos came apart.
Also the Processor chip wouldn't work until the car warmed up. The Clock would be wrong, and It'd lose the stored data, which included the verified MPH settings. Sometimes, after it warmed up, I'd press "Resume" and it would take off. Looking for some un-reachable value. Good thing it was an Escort, and not a Corvette.
My only complaint about the kit that uses Vacuam to actuate is that it's just too slow to see it needs to increase it's speed.
Be sure to hide the Magnet Speed sensor up above the Driveshaft, and protect the wires from street dirt and water, splashed up from the Road. It's best to mount that right behind the Transmission. It can go on the Differential, but it's in Jepordy back there.
Dakota Digital has the nicest unit. It senses speed from your speedometer cable, so there's no need to mess with magnets on the driveshaft. It also includes your choice of factory-look controllers that replace your turn signal arm.

Anyone ever tried replacing the factory cruise control with a newer servo activated one, yet still retain the factory switches?
I'm thinking of maybe trying that since the vacumn operated cruise is dreadfully slow, and will lose 5 mph before it wakes up, then after awhile it just nods off all together.

Second hand stores, people who buy odd lots, Surplus stores that get stuff from the Military, Electronics supply houses like DigiKey, Places like that. You sometimes can get Factory Rep's to tell you who thier suppliers are.
