Was watching the Barrett-Jackson Auction and I was surprised how well the 428 Mustangs were selling. And the prices!
My fil had a new (in 66) Meteor (Canadian Mercury) with the 428/345 hp engine.
This heavy 2 door could move. But in the old days it didn't have much of a performance rep.
A buddy of mine had a Torino (I think) with a 428 CJ and a 4 speed. I was amazed at it's acceleration. I was/am (maybe I should keep quiet about that) a chevy guy and I felt that it could hold it's own with some of the Chevy big blocks.
It's nice to see the old 428 finally getting some respect, with these B-J prices.
The 428 Thunder jet was rated at 345 horsepower at 4600 while the Police Intercepter was 360 hp @ 5400 (better intake and carb and cam). The CJ was rated at 335 hp @ 5200 and made 345 hp at 5200. The big catch was an Auto trans 428CJ shifted by itself at 6000 RPM and the engine made around 425hp there. The derating was insurance driven and drag racing sanctioning body rules that classed cars by pounds per horsepower. So they were underrated.
I know the 428/345 hp had hydraulic lifters, but what about the 360 hp police interceptor 428? I heard that it had mechanical lifters.
Hard to believe when you think of it, though, as most police departments would want less maintenance to do, hence hydraulics.
Anyway I drove that Meteor 428 a couple of times. Once, at a light there was a guy with a 390 Mustang , fastback, all jacked up, 4 speed manual.
We both went hard at the green and that 'Stang walked away from me at the start to about 30-35 mph. Then the Meteor 428, got it's second wind and whipped by the 390.
I was always impressed with how the 428 got the big Meteor moving, from 30 mph on. Before that, not too impressive, but after that, hold on.
The Meteor did not have any engine badging, so it was the perfect sleeper.
Not the 428 PI. Had the same cam as the CJ. The 390 PI had a mechanical cam. The 428 PI had standard heads, a CJ cam and intake and a 600 CFM Holley the same as the ThunderJet instead of the CJ's 735 CFM unit.
