I will be picking up a 86 F250 with a 460 4 Barrel it is a California Truck and runs great.Except for the Carb. What would be a good replacement for it? I really don't trust the rebuild units from the chain auto parts store. Thanks,Cliff
I would say that an Edelbrock would be an excellent choice for you if you didn't have emmisions tests, but the last 2 Edelbrocks I've gotten were put together pretty sloppy. Torn gaskets, burrs on the housings, stuff like that.
I've heard pretty good things about the Holley Truck Avenger though, so maybe someone else could give you some info on them.
I forgot to mention that I have the same truck and I had the same problem with the carb. I rebuilt it and it ran good until I switched to the Edelbrock on it. Rebuild kits are cheap and they do walk you through the rebuild process pretty well. Might be worth looking into.
I put an Edelbrock 750 on mine but I put a bigger cam in mine when I got it rebuilt this summer. It runs pretty good, but it still loads up on me from time to time. I still have what I think are ignition issues though. For a stock 460 a 600-650cfm carb should be just fine.
Thanks For the help. The owner moved to the town I live in from California. Before I get another Carb I want to try a few things before buying a new one.It runs good but it's running rich,so I think making a few adjustments and maybe a new choke.

I don't know what trouble your having but if your truck has the stock carb. it is a 4180 Holley. Rebuild kits are sold under the motorcraft #. The main problem with them is they do not have a power valve blow-out protection. These are available through Centex. The power valve is a dual stage and they are about $30, a rebuild kit are about $90. The 4180 is a good carb and are easy to work on. I have a California 86 F250 4x4 460, C-6.

Is it Centex auto parts? I have a Holley Carb manual by Haynes and it covers the 4180 I will be willing to learn to rebuild it.Thanks
