I purchased a wrecked 92 F350 460EFI 5 speed 2WD to use to replace the engine in my 90 4x4. How hard would it be to install the manual 5 speed in my 95
F-350 2WD. It currenty has a AODE? Could I get the cruse control to work?
The 95 F-350, if it's an automatic, is an E4OD. You can swap the tranny out, but you'll have to make a number of changes. You have a parts truck, so that puts you in good shape. However, you're in for a surprise if the 95 F-350 doesn't also have a 460. If it has any other motor the swap won't work.
You'll need the pedal assembly, master & slave clutch cylinders, tranny crossmember, and computer from the parts truck. If the wheelbase is the same between the two trucks, you can re-use the same driveshaft. Otherwise, I don't think the E4OD and ZF 5-speed are close enough to the same length, and it's time to go see the custom driveshaft shop.
If your truck is 460 EFI and has an automatic, you can swap in the manual "hardware" and it will work just fine with the automatic harness and computer. Obviously the wiring from the harness to the auto transmission won't be useful anymore, and you can tie that up with wire ties.
The computer that you have now will know that the tranny is missing, and it will tell you so when you download codes. But, it will not light the check engine light and as long as you wire in the neutral switch on the clutch's master cylinder, the EEC will know if you're in neutral, or in "any gear" and therefore adjust the timing curve appropriately.
No problem at all.
The neutral switch for the auto truck is different than the manual truck, and the connectors are different, but the color codes are the same so you can replace the connector with a junkyard one of the same years (95-96) and you'll be good to go.
Swapping the other way (manual to automatic) is more difficult.
It shouldn't be to hard to swap from a 5 speed to an aod since the aod isn't electronicly controlled, I'm not sure about the neutral switch though. (frederic you can tackle that one)
All you need to swap is a transmission, torque converter, proper balance flex plate (50 oz), transmission kick down cable, a shifter of some sort, and you are proably gonna need to either shorten the drive shaft or get a longer one.
For the most part it is a unbolt manual tranny and all associated parts in the proper order, then rebolt auto tranny and all associated parts in the proper order and to proper torque specs.

The automatic and manual neutral switches achieve the same things, but they are in different locations. The automatic neutral switch will tell the EEC what gear it's in, whereas the manual neutral switch just indicates neutral, or not neutral, and the clutch depression switch that rides on the master cylinder tells the EEC if you've engaged the clutch or not.
And yes, using an AOD which is not computerized will work with the manual, or automatic EEC's no problem. Again if the EEC is expecting the E40d then it will give you codes indicating it's catastrophic failure when you pull codes, but it won't light the engine light (normally anyway)
