Vss
I have a 1992 4x2 F-150 300ci M5OD. The speedo/odo/cruise occasionly drops dead, then comes back to life after about 10 minutes. I think that it is safe to say that the VSS is the problem.
I went to ALL of the parts stores in town and they all want to sell me the VSS that is the long skinny one which obviously attaches to a speedo cable. The problems with this are 1) My truck doesn't have a speedo cable 2) I have taken mulitple passes of the entire drive train on my creeper and can not find anything that even resembles this part.
The only 2 eletrical connections I see are the reverse light switch and the sensor on the diff, which all of the parts stores (including the Ford dealship) say is the ABS sensor.
Is it possible that this "ABS sensor" also doubles as the VSS on my truck? Is the so-called ABS sensor actually the VSS?
Because of the intermittent nature of your problem, I would suspect a wiring problem before I thought the VSS or speedo head was bad. I'd get under there and check the wiring real good before spending any money on parts.
