I have a 94 Auto 4.0 with 184K...I have had recent issues with a faulty MAF and Vacuum Modulator; Cel codes led to the new MAF and leakage of trany fluid into the crankcase led to the the new modulator; I am not sure why the mileage has been so effected but it dropped from about 20 mpg down to about 15 mpg at the same time the above issues started; I was wondering if anybody had a similar significant drop in mpg...the truck runs well with no hesitation or loss of power...the wires, plugs, and air filter are good...no vacuum leaks were found and the fuel filter is new...no cel's currently found and no change in driving conditions
Bill is right about winter taking it's toll on MPG in cold country, but seeing as how you live in S.C. , seems to me a 5 mpg drop is maybe a little much for winter there.
So, I wonder if the plugs, intake valves & combustion chamber may have become carbon fouled, from the tranny fluid that was ingested?????
Maybe a spark plug looksee, is in order & if they are, also maybe a dose of a good combustion chamber cleanerupper, like "Techron Concentrate", along with a tank of Chevron or Chevron/Texaco gas, and some spirited highway driving, would help tidy things up!!!!
It has worked in the past on my 99 4.0L, to get & keep the CCDI under control & MPG up.
