k...here's the deal....burning a quart every 60 miles now....here's what i've done:
compression check----cylinders 1 and 5 at 125#, 7 and 8 @140#, 2&3 @ 145#, and 4&6 @ 150#
vacuum check----19" steady, when i rev it, it drops to zero, then goes to about 23 and back to 19 when i let off....
new pcv valve (twice just to be sure)
has baffled valve covers
new valve seals
it doesn't smoke unless i open the secondaries on acceleration
I suspect you checked the plugs for oil after she's warmed up. The only thing I can add to your previous post is that maybe you have a vacuum leak somewhere - maybe the intake manifold gasket.
now i may not be right but here is what i think.
what i would do first is to check the head gasket and make shure it is not leaking. next i would check piston rings then a bottom gasket. it may work it might not but good luck. :}
LAST EDITED ON 16-Aug-01 AT 11:24 PM (EST)[p]k..there are no external leaks, don't think i have a vacuum leak...it is 19" and steady...and the only way to determine if it's a head gasket is to remove the head, right???
oh, the smoke when i accelerate really hard appears to be mainly on the passenger side
and no oil on the plugs...i just changed them..the threads had a little oil on them, and the electrodes were all gunked up
i think all of them had a little oil on the threads, only some of them had really bad deposits....when i said gunked i think that was the wrong word...looking at the spark plug guide in one of my engine books, i think the closest thing i found was probably the deposits from additives....the deposits were heavy on some plugs, but light on others...i will look more closely at them tomorrow, just to be sure....
Are the deposits wet and shiny? Black, brown or gray? Soft or hard and crusty?
FYI, I was losing a lot of oil, but the vast majority of it turned out the be the valve cover gaskets. They were leaking out the back on both sides, so the leak was not obvious from the engine compartment. Keep in mind that even if you don't see much or any oil in the driveway, you could be leaving a lot on the highway. Valve cover gaskets are easy to check and replace, so it can't hurt.
I'm still losing a little oil, but that's from bad rings on the #6 and #8 cylinders. That fix is gonna have to wait awhile.
