No turbo on cold start
I've got an 01 PSD manual that is very hard to start on cool mornings. When the truck does start, it wont rev past 1100 RPM, and it shakes ALOT. When its running cold, you can get out of the truck, and see it shaking. After the truck idles for about 10 min, it will rev up normally.
Is this normal? If not, what could be wrong with the truck???
Thanks.

due to the nature of diesels, they won't run well when cold. the engine needs heat to make the air inside the cylinders hot enough to ignite the diesel fuel when injected. DO NOT rev the engine up past 2000 rpm when cold, because it simply isnt good for it. let it warm up fully before taxing the engine and drivetrain components.
but i do agree with PSnut that something MAY be wrong because they shouldnt shake even at the coldest temperatures.

We took the truck to the dealer today. Its about 50 degrees outside, and it wouldnt start until it was plugged in for about an hour. There is a little bit of smoke that comes out when we try to crank it, and it smells like sulfur.
I should have a call from the Ford shop today or early tomorrow to see what the deal is.
Thanks.

Possibly a dirty exhaust backpressure sensor?? If it's clogged up, it won't sense the high backpressure in the exhaust which would signal the computer to open the EBPV. The fact that it runs fine after 10 minutes and it's warmed up makes me think this. But, I most definately wouldn't rule out something in the GP system.
