HAHAHAHHA...I think so, I know i carried a Cast iron 4bbl 390intake
thru Carlisle,PA All Ford Show, and it felt like 1000lbs by the time i carried it a half a mile!....I think an engine stand for the intake alone???
I don't know how much a 355 chevy weighs, but I've got one on a stand that my dad built (very stoutly mind you) 30 years ago, and it still stands strong.
Poking around and found this thread. Thought I'd bring it back to the top.
I had one of those less expensive stands with three wheels rated at 750lbs. I bought when I rebuilt my 390. It held up to the job but it did have a bit of a strain on it as evident by the slight bend it had with the full weight of the engine. I'm going to be starting a 460 project after the 1st of the year. I knew I needed something with more stout so I bought one of those Harbor Freight engine stands rated at 1000 lbs. I looked it over good and it seems to be built well enough for the job. Any other opinions on Harbor Freight? I got me a new engine hoist from them also. A two ton model they have on sale.
The company I use to work for bought a lot of tools from them. Basic hand tools, air tools, to heavy duty stuff. Used alot for oil field work. I used alot of their stuff and never had any complaints. I figure they bought from them because sometimes things would come up missing so why buy the expensive stuff just to have it walk of the job. Just my 2 cents.
>DO NOT BUY A CHEAP ENGINE STAND FOR THIS MOTOR!!!!!!

I hope you took a picture and sent it to JC Whitless. I would have loved to have been there when they opened it!

I have a 4 wheel stand that I paid about $50 for 4 years ago at O'reilys. It is rated at a 1000 pounds. I have used it on 2 390's and 1 360 with no problems. I used one of the 3 wheel versions on a small block brand x and do not recomend it at all, engine or the stand. With the 3 wheel version it tried to tip over when I torqued the main bearings and heads.:-staun I'm not sure about the 460, but I do know if my stand will hold up an FE intake, it should hold up anything. My stand is blue and grey and says AC Delco on it. I hope this helps.
When I was in High School (which is more years ago than I like to think about) I took the auto mechanics course. 2 years, M-F, 9:50 to 11:55 AM.
One of the guys had a Ch*vy I-6 on one of those 3 wheel stands. I forget what he was doing to it, but we suddenly heard him yell "LOOK OUT!"
I turned around just in time to see the whole thing go over.
KA-BANG!
That was the only time the teacher ever let someone get away with saying a profanity.
Even the 1000# models are somethign to watch out for. I had one of the previously mentioned #750 models I used with my 460 once. It had the tiny wheels, and was a death trap. This time around I borrowed my neighbors #1000 model. It held up pretty good till I noticed it got really hard to rotate my engine over, and it was getting pretty low. I take a closer look at what is going on, and find that the part that bolts up to the motor had slid about 1/2 way out of its sleave!!! Talk about makin poo in my pants. After that I kept a real close eye on it when I rotated the motor(pushing it in about 1/4" for every full turn). What is the lesson learned here?? Size isn't everything. I am going to buy a really good one this time!

I am so glad to hear that it isn't just me. I just recently rebuilt my 460. I removed the intake when I pulled the engine just to help the lift. Dissasembled the engine on the floor cause I didn't trust the stand. Yes that was a pain in the _ _ _. As I started putting it back together It was on the stand and bounced more and more with every part placed on it. Before I put the intake on I had a come along holding the front of the engine up. Made me feel a little safer. A hole in an oil pan would **** me off by now. Got the job done though and don't want to have to do that again.:-)
Buy at least a 1000# stand. I don't know if it is just me but I borrowed a 4 leg stand from a friend last year (my 3 leg already had a engine on it). What a total pain in the ^%#$%$ it was. You can't wheel your engine hoist straight up to it because the front 2 legs were to wide. Do you know how hard it is to try and hold your 750# 460 straight so you can bolt it up to the stand. I would buy a 3 wheeled unit.
Just my 2 cents.
