so in the somewhat near future i'll be swapping motors. i want to get rid of the speed density system. would i be best to just rebuild the engine and swap the speen density system out? or should i jsut get a newer crate engine and swap it in?
neither a crate nor a rebuilt will come with either system prewired in. A Mass air swap would be required for any significant performance increased engine.
If you have a non-ODB-II truck you can convert to mass air fairly easily by using 89-93 mustang engine harness, EEC, and splice it in. That's been covered here many times so give the search feature a try. Since mustangs didn't come with the 351W, you'll need a programmer of your choosing (like tweecer for example) to adjust the parameters of the EEC appropriately to compensate for the larger engine, larger injectors, and larger airflow.
Ford used to sell a mass air kit which included a harness, a MAF, and a computer, which essentially does the same thing in a more expensive, more plug-and-play way. That was discontinued from what I hear, however if you google for F150 mass air swap you'll get a ton of useful hits.
If you have an ODB-II truck, then things are actually simpler. You find yourself a 95/96 351W powered MAF truck in the junkyard (or parts from carparts.com, ebay, rock auto) and it's almost plug and play, with a little extra wiring for the MAF.
