Just found out a friend had her arm broken in a very minor collision, just sheet tin bent, all cars drivable, accident. air bag exploded shattering her arm completely, unnecessarily. Great pain and medical expense. Orthopedist said many wrist/arm breakage due to airbag/explosion. Fortunately, she was wearing her seatbelt so she wasn't burned by the bag.
Could it be that the airbag is designed to educate us to wear our seatbelt so we do not get blown to hell by it?
For the record, not an aerostar. '96 pontiac with new reduced strength airbag.
Sorry for the anger, but a friend was hurt unnecessarily. Maybe we should start to fuss.
front air bag or side bag?
i never drive with thumbs or fingers inside steering wheel anymore....force and speed of bag will amputate at hand...
lots of small children injured and killed by early full force front air bags
some of manuf. are now installing an intelligent air bag system that sets inflation force to weight of passenger in that position...haven't heard how well that works...complex and more parts to fail....
i'll take a shattered arm bone any day over a windshield lobotomy
But if you are wearing yourt seatbelt, how would you get a windshield lobotomy?
How about a steering wheel lobotomy? I know a lot of people, my wife included, who like to drive with the steering wheel 2 inches from their chest and face. Me, I sit as far back as my legs would reach. My arms would be a bit tired, but I feel safer that way
By the way, Ken, I thought it's the Federal Government who dictates the minimum force on the Airbag, not the automobile manufacturers.
i've seen big muscular guys come into the ER with both radii sticking out the elbow or wrist from stiff arming in a headon accident
still lots of drivers out there that refuse to wear a seat belt...my father is 85 and has never worn one...claims he doesn't want to get trapped in a burning car by a jammed belt?
has disabled the air bags in every car/truck he has owned
I believe the fed set the standards, I believe the early bags were much more powerful than those after '94 or so. She was driving. The passenger side deployed too blowing apart the whole dash and blew out windshield.
I think reasonable questioning is good, these damn things need to be questioned.
Isn't it a bit arrogant to say that we can lessen injuries in an accident by adding energy and violence to the mix???
My friend was hurt for no reason, she is in great pain and the orthopod isn't sure the bone will heal well at all. She was wearing her seatbelt. I still think the "F" in all the Federal agencies stands for FUBAR. Think about it.
It's funny but I feel safer in my '91 sans airbag than in my Acura with explosive devices surrounding every tender part of my body.
Way back when we were taught to keep our hands on the wheel at the 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. position. Not so with airbags, last I heard it was best at the 9:00 and 3:00 ??????????. I'm one of those short legged peoples and I do worry about this and will not let young folks sit in the front seat.
Along with air bags, car seats are becoming BS too. You are not suppose to put them next to an airbag, but yet auto manufacturers are putting them everywere (side windows, in the front seats back panel for the back seat passengers) so you can't get around them.
That is why I like the Aero, I can put my sons Carseat next to me with no worries of the airbag. One of the big selling points of the Aero to me.
And with the big F government, there is talk of forcing kids to be in child seats until they are 14/15 years old. What next, force my mom to use a child seat (because she is smaller than my 7yo and 10yo?) My mom is 4'9" (and so is my mother-in-law) and my daugters are 5'0 and 5'2 respectively.
just love these extreme tilt steering wheels, can aim the steering wheel air bag at body center mass and as much power as a 340 Weatherby rifle
