Welcome to FTE kbomber.

Well what changed during the oil change???? I take it that the engine wasn't knocking beforehand, right????

If so, that leaves us looking at the filter & the weight oil used.

Was it the specified Motorcraft filter, or some other aftermarket brand????
If it's a aftermarket brand, does it meet or exceed Fords specifications & is it constructed internally the same????

Was the specified weight lube used for the weather your expecting during this oil change intervial & does it meet or exceed Fords specfications????

Is it the same brand & weight you've been using without knocking problems????? If so, I'd suspct a filter problem & would return for a replacement filter & makeup qt of oil.

Your oil filter has an anti-drain back valve that keeps the filter full of oil so that at startup, the oil is already in the filter and the system can pressurize quicker. It sounds like your filter has a leaking valve. It allows the oil to flow back into the pan and at startup, the system has to pressurize the filter first and then oil gets to the parts. It's similiar to starting the engine after every oil change in that you have to wait for the oil pressure to build before the engine gets quiet. I would replace the filter with a brand name, preferably not orange, and that should solve the problem.

I concur with PawPaw & Flash's response. If you had the oil changed at a shop, I would return the Navigator, telling them the concerns you just stated. This way, you'll be protected for any future engine problems, oil related. If they say nothing is wrong, then have them state that in writing. The sooner the better, (mileage) since the oil was changed. If they do nothing, and you have this in writing, then I would change the oil filter with the correct Motorcraft part. Lastly, with this being the middle of winter, what weight / viscosity of oil was put in your vehicle? PawPaw concern is also mine... Ed

its more than likely the oil filter. change it out , ford has the special FL820S filter to prevent this issue. my guess is they used the atomic orange can of death on yours.

I suspect that the rod bearings are getting a bit worn and knock a bit before the oil presure builds up. Use 10w30 instead if you are using 5w20 or 5w30 and that will help in a a looser engine.

Which engine you got?? 4.6 or 5.4?? If it is a 5.4 you could have the beginnings of a little piston slap. If that is what it is there is no real harm just an annoying noise for a minute or two at start up until the engine warms up. Especially so in the cooler months. I have a 97 F-150 with the piston slap which started at about 85,000 miles. I have almost 150,000 miles now and no problems other than the noise. I have found no magical oil or additive that cures it so I just live with it. I would much rather think it is piston slap rather than a rod knock if the engine has had been reasonably maintained.

LANCE! You should be ashamed. It is not that they are really THAT BAD. It's just that you can get a better filter for the same (or cheaper) price.

My 97 5.4 started the piston slap at around 115K miles. At around 140K now, no other significant issues.

SEARCH for "piston slap" for a LOT of details.
