oil usage when towing

just got back from a 700 mile round trip
to ME-- trailering 4-4500lb enclosed trailer
I topped off my engine oil b4 leaving and
when I got home it was time for oil change
only about 5 1\2quarts came out
and it took 7 1\2 to refill to full line

this is the first significant oil usage I have seen with
this truck-- which is now at almost 18K
any one else?

forgot to note that she ran like a top the whole
way and I see no signs of oil leaks-- but the exhaust
really stinks

I did a 2000 mile trip hauling a slide in Camper. Oil level never moved on the dipstick.

This is the first truck, gas or diesel , I owned, that never uses any oil when you work it hard.

Mine uses a little when I go over the mountains. Last 700 mile trip used 1/2 qt. Never uses oil when towing on flat ground. Do you tow on flat or over mountains?

I think it has to do with the auto downshifting. When I'm coming down either side of the Grapevine (very steep and long), it's usually around 4500-5k rpms to keep the speed in check. That has got to create a TON of vacuum with oil fly'n around the crankcase.

When it's driven as daily driver, no oil usage between changes.<O></O>

What brand and weight oil are you using? What brand oil filter? If using certain brands @ certain weights. What might be happening is the oil is vaporizing out the PVC. Again...depends on what brand and weight you are using.

On my 2003 V10 the oil dip stick does not show a "FULL" line. But just a "MIN" and "MAX". So if the oil is within those markings...then all is good and "DO NOT ADD OIL"...according to my Owners Manual. Not sure if the '05 3V has changed that or not.

Josh,
The last 3 trips down the interstate I pulled 5500 LB, 4250 LB and 6700 LB all in one week. The traffic was light but fast and I stayed with it. Average speed was 78-82 almost all the way from New Boston to Dallas. I have the 4.30 gearing so I was up close to 3000 RPMs. I noticed that I had used a quart of oil during that week. But - it was the only time I've stayed at that RPM for that long of a stretch. That and I have about 107K miles on this one. But ever since that time not a drop.

What speed/rpms were you at?

i use the MC 5w20 s and MC filter
it would seem to pull in the low 2k much of the time and
on med grades shift up once to high 2's and on
larger grades shift up in the 3k range
I will keep my eye on it
hopefully its fine
thanks for replys
