My speedometer needle bounces constantly when below 35mph. What causes that and what can I do to fix it? It's on a 78 F150 with a 351m and c6 trans. What kind of lubes can be used on that cable?
Sounds like your speedometer inner cable needs lube. Remove it from behind the speedometer, pull the inner cable out, clean it and apply speedo lube & reinstall. When cable is all the way down, push and rotate it til it engages in trans gear, you will feel it drop in.
While it is out, check closely for frayed wires in cable. If any, replace it. Make sure outer cable is not kinked, this will cause jumping also.
Don't over-lube, because in the winter, the lube will be stiff and will cause the same bounce as a dry cable.
