I bought a 05' E.B.Expedition new in the middle of December 2005, drove it a few weeks and was really disapointed w/ the fuel mileage. I put a K/N air filter in and I gained basically a half mile a gallon better fuel. Does anyone have any other suggestions to gain a little better mileage? Does a performance chip help at all in this department?---------Help!!!!!!!! (I am getting around 16mpg hwy)
I hate to tell you, but I get 16.5-17 in town and average about 19.5 on the road. i've seen 20mpg on the road as long as I keep it under 80mph. This is based on my calcuations and not on the trip computer. On the flip side, a friend has the exact same truck bought the same week. He's lucky to get 15mph ever. I think its driving style and maybe the computer program.
The truck is an 05 EB 5.4 2wd. Don't know what to tell you.
I got $100,000 for anyone who can show me 20MPG across 1000 miles of highway driving at 65 MPH in a 5.4 4x4.
Really. Cause if you can show me how you do it, I'll make the 100 grand back many times over. (Not mention that Ford would gladly pay it up.)
Forget the 100k! How could anyone drive 1000 miles at 65 mph with granny giving you the finger to step on it? Where could one pull off this feat? Some abandoned testing facility? If you tried it on an actual highway these days you would have to be escorted by sheriff's to maintain safety standards for the normal flow of traffic going 75-80. The only way you are going to consistantly get much better than 16 mpg is behind a motor home...on a stiff hitch! Seriously though, I get 16-18 at 75-80 and find it hard to believe that a vehicle of this size gets even that good. Try going back to the Bronco for a while and you too will be thrilled with 16+.
I love all these "emergency" posts about terrible gas mileage, and that something must be wrong with the truck. I'll tell you what's wrong with it... it's HEAVY and it's shaped like a BRICK.
I'd be ecstatic if I was seeing 16MPG!!!
An intake, exhaust and a chip will probably help, but without a doubt, the single best gas mileage producing mod is a light foot. That's it! On a recent roadtrip from San Diego to Breckenridge, CO and back, I checked my mileage at every gas stop. I noticed that when my wife drove, she was getting about 14-15 MPG, when I drove it dropped to like 13. And I thought I was being conservative. Still, all in all I averaged ~14MPG over the trip, that's in the mountains and with four snowboards on the roof, 4 people inside and the entire cargo area full of crap. I'm pretty pleased with that number!
I would have to agree, I get between 15 and 16 with 85 percent highway driving. We have a Focus that gets almost 30 around town, needless to say the Expy is for the long trips.
Man, I sure do miss my Focus whenever I have to fill up my Expedition. I average about $65 a fill-up and about once a week, and that's on the Navy base where I don't have to pay Federal taxes. $65 in my Focus would last me pretty much all month. Unless, of course, there was a track day or autocross thrown in there.
Ours is just an SE sedan with the 2.0 spi but it moves ok for a 4cyl auto. Like you say, it beats $60 fillups. The car really handles well and it is big enough that you don't feel totaly cramped up to ride in it.
I had an '02 SVT with H&R Coilovers, AEM intake, an off-road pipe and SCT custom tune. Handling was out of this world, embarrassed Cobras, BMWs and other much more expensive cars on a road course. A little under powered to be a threat at the dragstrip. I would have kept it but it just didn't work well with my mountain biking and snowboarding habits. Hmmm, maybe I'll get a used ZX3...
