I have been cruising the streets around my house for a while now looking for a nice truck to buy. I dont have much cash so when i came across a 1990 F-150 with a lift kit A/t tires and 64k original miles i obviosly stopped and checked it out. Well the guy is selling it for 2k so its the perfect price but there are some things wrongs with it.
some of the things I noticed were:
the steering column is very wobbly
the passenger window doesnt work
There are two large scratches down to the paint on the passenger door
There is some rust on the gutters above each door
Are these things which are easily fixed? Id like to do the work myself but im not a mechanic and im not sure if these things are just minor or require professional attention.
I would just about bet you that it's at least 164k on it. But that a side, a lift kit, wobbly steering, That truck has been rode hard and put up wet. If you're not a mechanic now, you will be by the time this truck is done wit you. lol
Maybe (and I havn't seen the truck) if you could get it for half that and it wasn't your only transpertation. Go to Ebay, you can find a better deal than that. I paid $3100 for this 4x4 lariat.
and look at it now..

well the outside has is problems but the engine bay looks like its nearly brand new. it does have that lift kit but i dont believe its ever been through the mud, i dont see any mud anyplace and the steering isnt bad its just seems like the steering wheel column is very loose I was hoping that it could have possiblly been from bolts coming loose perhaps.
I assume it is a 4x4, with that kelly blue book says its worth $2100 in fair condition and $2800 in excellent condition. I think you can get it for less than $2k, and like I said before so long as it's not your only ride. At that price you could learn a lot by working on it. But remember, the guy selling it has probably went to a lot of trouble to clean it up and make it look good, so if the steering was an easy fix he would have probably fixed it. But withthat model truck, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if you had to relace the whole steering assembly. You can find all your parts at the junk yard. I say go back, craw all over the truck, take a small peice of card broad so you can get a good look under it. I know your not a mechanic but you can see rust, leaks , loose bolts and bent metal. Assuming you don't find anything thats terminal, I would still low ball him ( in a nice way of course). Ask him if he'll take $1000 for it and go from there.
Well i took a test drive today and the engine still runs pretty good and the 4 wheel drive works too, so ive decided to buy it. I am currently in college right now so il be mixing my time between fixing her up and school. I think as long as i can get back and forth to school with no problems i wont mind working on it whenever i get a chance.
