I just bought a billit grille for my 99 explorer. It looks great and has all of the hardware but did not come with instructions. Do I have to cut out the whole origonal peace in the center with the ford logo because It doesn't look like it will fit? Thnx in advance.
On most billet grilles, you have to remove the Ford emblem. Take the grill off and look on the back of it. There should be two nuts holding the emblem on. Then the billet will fit flush.
I looked at it and from what I can tell there still will not be enough room. Also, won't you be able to see it through the billit grille? All of the other explorers with them I can not which is why I am guessing the cut the whole middle section out.
You can cut it out - thats not a problem, but usually its not necessary. I've helped install a few and never had to cut the center out - just remove the emblem. Up to you....
I agree with Cobra. Take the emblem off and "dry fit" the new grille to see if it looks the way you want. Depending how close the horizontal elements on your new grille, you shouldn't be able to see the exist grille. I fully removed the honeycomb backer grille on my 98 when I installed my billet.
I took the extra trouble to remove the headlight assemblies, the whole oem grille and the painted strip below the grille to perform my install rather than trying to cut out segments of the honeycomb back grille out . be careful on the lower strip, the barbed retainer clips can gouge the painted piece if you''re not careful.
This is what I remember from doing this 6 years ago.
hmm. depends on the grille i guess. i've had 2 previous billet grilles, 1 on a 2000 mustang, and 1 on a 92 explorer. both times i've had to completely remove the factory grilles (cut out the honeycomb on the stang and remove the stock plastic chrome colored grill on the X) to get the billet grille on there... wasnt happy about it but thats the way it was....
if your 99 has the EXACT same plastic grille as my 97 does, then you probably have to take the whole thing out. i researched some for mine (they are soooo damn expensive) and the ones i've come across have you take out the stock stuff.... just my exp.
