I just installed clearance lights on my 05 Excursion. The wiring harness fit everything except the travel computer module. I haven't checked with ford yet 'cause I just finished installing them. They look great, but don't light up... Everything is ford, The parts guy said the harness should fit the super duty trucks...I believed the Ex fit that description. Has anyone installed clearance lights on their Excursion with the ford factory parts?
I do not believe that it will plug into the harness. My understanding is that you need to run a wire down one of the a-pillars and tap into one of the wires to the parking lights. Have been thinking about doing the mod for a while. What did you use to drill the holes?
Sorry I haven't replied to your questions. I have the lights working now and they do look good...
I bought the lights and harness from Ford. They cost me about $100. I ordered 5 lights and a wiring harness for the super duty as described in an article from an earlier post. I damaged the original Ex harness and had to order that one too (another $48.00) then I stripped the wires for the clearance lights (which had the proper connectors) from the super duty harness and attached them to the harness for the Ex. I had to ground the black wire and then find a wire that corresponded to the brown wire for the clearance lights. I haven't done much vehicle wiring in the past, but I found a brown wire that was part of the park lights circuit. It was in one of the bundle of wires near the connector and (dumb me) I realized they are color coded for the whole truck.
The drill bit I used looked like a cone and had several stepped increments from about 1/4" to 3/4 ". I'll have to ask my son what it is called, 'cause he bought it. It's shape reminds me of one of my router bits.
I had to laugh at myself because when I had the lights installed and no power to them and then realized the harness was wrong I couldn't just stop and take everything back...I had 15 holes in the roof of this expensive truck. Needless to say I have one of the few Excursions with ford factory clearance lights.
Where was the connector, down in the dash near the light switch? When you state the harness was it the harness for the clearance lights?
I have often wondered why the X's didn't have the auto light feature as well. I had a 2000 F150 before this and the light switched looked identical in shape and design except for the auto-on feature. Has anyone ever tried to integrate the Auto-on switch into the X??
Mine came with the auto on function. I would guess that you could add it...but would need to add the electronic eye on the dash as well as the switch itself.
Every thing I did involved the passenger side. The wiring harness for the clearance lights for my son's 2001 super duty had the connector at the floor on the passenger side just below the glove box. Had to remove the kick panel there and found the connector. That's where I set up the work for my Ex. I realize now the wiring is different for the Ex than the super duty. Harnesses were different, consequently I had to make my own wiring harness and find the park light wire independent of the harness. The super duty was an exchange of harnesses and much simpler.
Mine came with the auto on light feature, and I really like it.
I found that out myself, that the wiring harnesses are different between the X and the SD. I installed the new mirrors (with signals and clearance lights) on my '03 X when one of the heated mirrors quit working. The harness plugged right in the connector, but first nothing was lit, then only the signals, and after running another wire, they are finally all lit and working... Took a while for that to figure out.
