Have a question concerning the operating temperature of the two subject units. Both seem to get really hot after only several minutes of operation. Truck runs ok, but it seems that any electronics that get too hot to touch in such a short time are self-distructing. The Duraspark is original, which means it is going on 25 years old.
Now, I didn't really have a problem with life's precious fluids migrating down the inner fenderwell from the Duraspark, but it kinda bugs my brother. He thinks that anything that oozes ought to be banished. I think it can be cosidered an art object. So, do they usually get that hot?
I would suggest that you stop by your local parts store and pick up the duraspark unit. Usually, when they start givin' up the liquid- they are on their last leg. I just bought one from NAPA for $54.00 delivered my front door.
They are available at Auto-Zone for about $25.00. Make sure when you get one that the plastic grommet where the wires enter the module is the same color as the original. It does matter. It should be the same color as the plastic part of the magnetic pickup (stator) inside the distributor.
Another option is to upgrade your ignition by using an MSD Box. I have 78 400M with MSD 6A. If you get harness that goes from the stock distributor to the MSD (or splice in some wires), you won't need the duraspark unit any more.
