Howdy! I have not talked to my dealer yet so I'm asking a quick question here first. I have a 05 F250 CC, LB, 4x4, with the brake controller installed from the factory.. I just purchased my first goose neck trailer. It's 36' with 3 axles. I bought this to haul tobacco in. I'll be pulling 10,000 lbs plus trailer weight. This trailer is 20 years old. My question is what do I need to make the electric brakes work? Adapters, extra wiring or what? Thanks for any info.
You need to have a 7 pin connector on your trailer or an adapter anyway. Check the brakes on the trailer if its old to make sure the brakes are in working order. At the very least they may need to be adjusted.
I have wired the trailer with all new lights and wiring. The wire is a four prong flat. I have a 7 pin connector that I never used off of my 96 F150, but it's missing two of the contacts. I've checked the brakes and bearings. They looked good. Do I need extra wires? Will the brakes work off the tail light wires but controlled by the brake controller when I get the 7 pin connector. Thanks.
There is a standard pattern that is followed for the 7-pin connectors. They used to have the little diagram right on the flap you lift up on the truck to plug into.
Electric Brakes are controlled by their own dedicated wire. To make that trailer work right, you're going to need at least five wires: Tail Lights, Left Turn, Right Turn, Ground, and Brake Controller output.
Don't put the brakes on with one of the stoplight wires, though. That'll send full voltage to those brakes, and that will lock them up tight whenever you even tap the pedal.
